Obituary of Joseph Carl Northrup
Joseph “Joe” Carl Northrup, 91 of Middletown and Shadow Lake Village, who shared 59 years of marriage with his loving wife, Simone Northrup, died peacefully at the Brookmont HealthCare Center in Effort, PA on July 20, 2010, surrounded by members of his loving family.
Born in Buffalo, NY, the son of Oscar and Mary (Redd) Northrup, Joe was a long time communicant of the St. James Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank.
Joe was raised on a farm in Madrid, New York. He joined the US Army in 1939 shortly before World War II. Joe proudly served in the US Army for more than 27 years before retiring as a Sergeant Major at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1966. He was a decorated veteran, having fought in the D-Day invasion and under General George S. Patton during the Battle of the Bulge.
After his retirement from the US Army, Joe continued to serve his country by working for the US Postal Service in Red Bank and later as a civil servant at Fort Monmouth.
In his early years, Joe was a star basketball player for his high school team and was honored to be selected as a member of the US Olympic track and field team for the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. In 1975, Joe began running long distances and ran in the Boston Marathon that year with his son Daniel. Joe enjoyed running competitively with the Shore Athletic Club and competed in many marathons and other long distance races. Joe was also a passionate golfer and was an active member the of Lakers golf group who played each week at Shadow Lake Village.
Joe is survived by his sons Richard J. Northrup and his wife Lorraine of Crossville, Tennessee; Robert W. Northrup of Massena, New York; Daniel P. Northrup and his wife Karen of Middleton, Massachusetts and his daughter Nancy and her husband Kevin Murawski of Kunkletown, Pennsylvania. Joe was especially proud of his grandchildren; his grandson Scott Northrup and his wife Jane of Liverpool, New York; his granddaughter Leigh Michelle Northrup who predeceased him; his granddaughter Jennifer and her husband Christopher Foust of Fayetteville, North Carolina and his granddaughter Megan and her husband Brett Moody of Fairfax, Virginia. Joe will also be missed by his many great-grandchildren.
A wake to celebrate Joe’s life and his many accomplishments will take place on Friday July 23, 2010 from 4PM to 7PM at the John E. Day Funeral Home 85 Riverside Avenue Red Bank, NJ 07701.
A Funeral Liturgy will take place at St. James RC Church in Red Bank on Saturday July 24, 2010 at 11AM. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Monmouth County SPCA or the Greater New Jersey Chapter of the American Alzheimer’s Association or similar organizations focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
