Obituary of Philip J. Torsney, Jr., M.D., FACP


Philip J. Torsney, Jr., M.D. F.A.C.P., 77, passed away at home on March 7, 2010 surrounded by his family. Born in Orange, he previously resided in Rumson and Middletown before moving to Red Bank in 2009.

He received his Bachelors Degree from Georgetown University in 1953 and then graduated from their School of Medicine in 1957. Philip was a board certified doctor in internal medicine, focusing on allergy and immunology.

Philip proudly served in the US Navy for 10 years and last served as the head of the Allergy Section, US Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland. He was also on the teaching staff of Georgetown University Hospital and Hahnemann Medical College.

Philip published 14 articles in various medical journals on subjects of Allergy and Immunology; served on the research council and was chairman of the insect committee of the American Academy.

He was honored by his peers and colleagues as a member of the Fellow of American College of Physicians; Chest Physicians; Academy of Allergy; College of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

Philip was a communicant of St. James RC Church, Red Bank.

He retired from active practice in June of 2009 after 52 years and was a senior attending physician at Monmouth Medical Center.

Dr. Torsney and his brother Jerome were thoroughbred horse owners, breeders and raced and bred many outstanding race horses in both the US and in Ireland.

Philip was predeceased by his father, Philip, mother, Gertrude, brother, Jerome Torsney, MD, sister, Regina Torsney Heil and his beloved wife, Virginia H. “Sally” Torsney in 2008.

He is survived by his son, special agent, FBI, Philip III and his wife, Julie; daughters; Cathy Liptak and her husband, Michael and Colleen Torsney, 6 grandchildren; Cullen, Caitlyn, Michelle, James, Philip and Jack and a brother, Brian and sister, Colleen Foster

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 11th from 5-8pm at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 12th at 10am at St. James RC Church, Red Bank. Interment will be private.
