Alfred John Campanella

June 12, 1930 ~ November 8, 2017 (age 87) 87 Years Old

            Alfred Campanella passed peacefully away at home on November 8, 2017.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Lucy M. Campanella and his four children: Alfred and his wife Carolyn of Cherry Hill, New Jersey; Lucy-Ann and her husband John Mascola of Rockville, Maryland; Andrew and his wife Drew-Ann Dunigan of Vero Beach, Florida and Dorset, Vermont; Felicia Campanella and her husband James Anderson of Fair Haven, New Jersey.  He is survived by 8 grandchildren who affectionately called him "Granddad":  Matthew, David, and Elizabeth Campanella; Paul and Madeline Mascola; Julia Campanella; Amanda and Hannah Anderson. Also, his brother Bennett and sister-in-law Maralyn Campanella; sister-in-law Madeline Muscatello; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Alexander and Carole Muscatello.


            He was a graduate of Manhattan Preparatory School, class of 1948 and Manhattan College class of 1952, Riverdale, New York.  His distinguished teaching career began at Englewood School for Boys, Englewood, New Jersey and Brownson High School, Hackensack, New Jersey, and Teaneck High School, Teaneck, New Jersey.  Earning a Master of Arts degree from (now) Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey he went on as Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Northern Valley Regional High School District, Demarest, New Jersey followed by his appointment as Associate Superintendent of School of the Woodbridge School District, Woodbridge, New Jersey.  He earned the Degree of Doctor of Education in l972 from Rutgers The State University of New Jersey, New Brunswick, New Jersey.  He was appointed Superintendent of  Shore Regional High School District, West Long Branch, New Jersey in l979 and remained there until retirement in l992.   During his teaching career he edited the Social Studies Journal; was presented the Distinguished Educator Award from IDEA Academy of Fellows; implemented a summer program at Princeton University for New Jersey educators; and was received into the professional fraternity of education, Phi Delta Kappa, and taught numerous courses as adjunct instructor at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rutherford campus, New Jersey.


            As an active member of the Red Bank Rotary, Alfred strove to promote the importance of education in several programs offered in the district and was named Paul Harris Fellow by the Red Bank Club and Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, an honor he greatly esteemed. In retirement he "re-careered" earning a Master of Science Degree from Iona College, New Rochelle, New York in 1994 and as a Licensed Professional Counselor, he worked in marriage and family therapy at the Catholic Charities facility, Red Bank, New Jersey for nearly twenty years.


            Alfred was a man of deep religious roots and was actively associated at the Church of St. Peter the Apostle, River Edge, New Jersey where he served as a religious education teacher and Lector.  Upon moving to Lincroft in 1973, he served at the Church of St. Leo the Great as Eucharistic Minister and catechist in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process. Alfred was an original member of the chapter of Lay Franciscans (Third Order) formed at the parish incorporating the life style and following the spirit and charism of St. Francis.  In 2014 he and Lucy were honored with the Lumen Christi Award for "...generosity of time and effort over many years.  He will be remembered by many as a gentle man, a loving husband, dedicated father and outstanding educator.


            Visitation will be held on Monday, November 13, 2017 from 3-7 PM at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, New Jersey 07701.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 10:15 am at the Church of St. Leo the Great, 50 Hurley's Lane, Lincroft, New Jersey 07738 followed by Interment at St. Gabriel's Cemetery, 549 County Road, Rt. 520, Marlboro, New Jersey 07746. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Brothers of the Christian Schools, PO Box 238, Lincroft, NJ 07738
