Tribute

Barbara A. Powers, resided in Manalapan, NJ for the past 15 years, having spent the previous 35 years as a resident of Floral Park, NY. Born in Queens, NY, on November 22, 1936, the daughter of Charles LaSpisa and Maria Falanga, Barbara graduated from Bellevue School of Nursing in New York City in 1957 as a registered nurse. She earned her BS at Adelphi University in 1981. Recognizing the importance of education and community service, Barbara served for 12 years as a member of the Sewanhaka High School District Board of Education, and was a past president of Floral Park Independent School District. Barbara was a voracious reader, loved culture and art, and excelled as a gourmet cook.

In addition to her parents, Barbara is predeceased by her beloved husband of 40 years, Dr. John C. Powers, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Carla Ruth Powers and Janis Irene Powers; by her sister, Christine Dorsey; by her step-sisters, Helen Yusko and Carolyn Katzoff, and cousin, Miriam Roche. Barbara will be missed by her five grandchildren, Olivia, Gwen, Ruby, Veronica, and Barrett.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 5th between 4:00 and 8:00 PM, at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Avenue, Red Bank, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Monday, May 6th, at St. Anthony of Padua RC Church on Bridge Avenue in Red Bank.
