Janet Cugini

Janet Cugini, also fondly known as “Grammy,” resided in Shrewsbury’s  Brandywine at Sycamore until her peaceful passing on Sunday, July 11th.  She had previously lived in Staten Island, NY, and Middletown and Tinton Falls, NJ.  She was born in Staten Island to the late Emil Olsen and Sophie Terjesen Olsen. Her professional years were spent as a secretary in the legal department of Fort Monmouth (NJ).  She married Joseph Cugini, with whom she raised their three children, daughters, Jane and Ellen and son, Donald.  Joseph predeceased her in April of 2018.  She was also preceded in death by her brother, Thomas Olsen and sister, Lillian Lawrence.  

True to her Nordic heritage, she was a dedicated member of The Sons of Norway, and she loved the NY Yankees and Giants, enthusiastically following ‘her teams.’  But, most of all, she cherished times with family and friends, and they cherished the times with her.  Her children and grandchildren will deeply mourn her loss, the absence of her warmth, the occasions she created to mark the seasons of their lives, now memories for her surviving daughters, Jane Cernera and her husband Donald, and Ellen Kelly and her husband, Patrick, and son, Donald and his wife Kim.  Memories cherished too, by 10 grandchildren: Thomas, Robert and his wife Jessica, Edward, and Gregory Cernera; Kirsten and Karinne Kelly; Brian, Kelsey, Kyle, and Holly Cugini.

All arrangements are private and have been entrusted to the John E. Day Funeral Home of Red Bank, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.
