John Gerard McCarthy

John “Jerry” McCarthy, 81, a beloved retired Lieutenant for the New York City Transit Police Department passed peacefully on May 21, 2020 at Riverview Hospital in Red Bank, NJ. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to Patrick and Margaret (McKenna) McCarthy. He was the loving brother of Patrick McCarthy and his late sister, Mary Olsen. Jerry served his country from 1955-1958 as a Non Commissioned Officer for the United States Navy. He later met and married Arleen (Rooney) McCarthy, they had 4 children and settled in Staten Island, NY. He worked for the New York Transit Police Department for 33 years and was the President of the Lieutenants Benevolent Association. Jerry was an avid golfer and worked at La Tourette Golf Course in Staten Island, NY for 20 years where he developed a second family. Jerry was one of a kind, a true gentleman with a huge heart.

He loved his family and his friends. He is survived by his 4 children, John McCarthy Jr. of Point Pleasant, NJ, Daniel McCarthy of Jackson, NJ, James McCarthy and his wife Tara of Middletown, NJ, Arleen McCarthy Kuhn and her husband Christopher of Westchester, NY; his brother, Patrick McCarthy and his wife, Nan of Mt. Sinai, NY; and two grandchildren, James and Ryan McCarthy. Jerry defined special. He was the most generous man with the sweetest smile and the most compassionate heart. He was loved immensely and will be missed by so many.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, private services will be held for the immediate family only on Tuesday June 2, 2020 at Resurrection Cemetery in Staten Island. A Memorial will be held in Jerry’s name when the family is allowed to have one.
