Margaret Evans

Peggy Evans of Red Bank, New Jersey, widow of Colonel (retired) Frank J Evans, died at the Atrium on January 9, 2021.  She was 101 years old.  Daughter of Dr. Raymond and Margaret Kelly Mullin of Newark, she was born on May 21, 1919.  She graduated from Eden Hall, Torresdale P.A.  and Manhattanville College in 1941.

During World War II, she served in the Red Cross in the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal, where she met her future husband.  Married after the war, in 1945, she accompanied her husband to Shanghai where he worked for the United Nations Relief.  He was re-commissioned in the US Army as a captain, Signal Corps, class of 1941, and assigned to Yokohama, Japan.  They also lived in Frankfurt, Germany with the 3rd Amored division and Seoul, Korea with the Korean Military Adivsory Group, and where they adopted their daughter Brigid in 1965.  They also were stationed several times at Fort Monmouth, NJ at the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C., in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM and the Command General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS.

Col. Evans retired in 1968 in Little Silver, NJ where they resided for twenty-five year before moving to Florida.  Col. Evans died in 1995 and Peggy returned to the Red Bank area to be closer to family.

She taught in Sacred Heart schools in Shanghai and Seoul, in Army and Army dependents schools in Japan, and in Colts Neck, NJ.  While in Germany, she served as President of the N.C.W.C.’s new Army Catholic Women’s groups representing organizations from Scotland to Morocco.  She was active in her college, Manhanttanville’s  Alumni Association, serving a term on its board.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Judith Skeffington and Patricia Bransome, her brothers, Dr. Raymond Mullin and David M. Mullin.  She leaves her beloved daughter Brigid Dolan, her grandchildren Frank and Catherine Dolan, and 15 nieces and nephews.

Burial of her ashes will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. 

A memorial mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven, NJ in the coming months.
