Tribute

Mario Gazzara, 105, of Shrewsbury, NJ and formerly of Flushing and New Hyde Park, NY passed away peacefully on February 1, 2020.  He was born in 1914 to the late Paolo and Angela Gazzara in New York City.  He proudly served our country in the Airforce Division of the U.S. Army and later went on to earn a law degree from NYU School of Law.  Mario and his family founded Gazzara and Sons, which was a successful construction company that built many homes that still stand today in Flushing, Astoria, and throughout Queens, NY.

Mario enjoyed travel with his family, playing golf, tending to his vegetable garden, and playing the organ. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Cellini Lodge Sons of Italy.  He also was a volunteer in the Brave Hearts Society at St. Francis Hospital to counsel and support patients who were going through open heart surgery.  More recently, Mario enjoyed residing at Brandywine Assisted Living and loved winning at Bingo with his friends.  Even at the age of 105 years old, he continued to be an avid follower of the stock market.

Mario is predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Filomena, and his siblings, Mary Gazzara, Vincent (Jimmy) Gazzara, and Katherine Abramo.  He is survived by his son, Paul Gazzara, daughter in law, Lynda Gazzara, and daughters, Felicia and Angela Gazzara, grandchildren, John Mario and Mia Gazzara, and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a visitation on Thursday February 6, 2020 from 3-8 PM at John E. Day Funeral Home 85 Riverside Ave. Red Bank, NJ and Friday February 7, 2020 from 3-8 PM at Park Funeral Chapel 2175 Jericho Turnpike New Hyde Park, NY.  A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday February 8, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Notre Dame Church 45 Mayfair Road New Hyde Park, NY.  Entombment to follow at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, NY.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to St. Francis Hospital 100 Port Washington Blvd. Roslyn, NY 11576.
