Tribute

Robert Neil Sandberg, 77, of Tinton Falls, peacefully went to be with his Lord on July 17, 2022. Robert was born March 31, 1945 at Newark Presbyterian Hospital to Victor Alexander Sandberg and Agnes Currie Samson Sandberg

He attended Red Bank Regional High School and then transferred to Monmouth Regional High School when it opened, graduating in 1963, the first graduating class. Robert then graduated from Houghton College, NY in 1967. Later, he was close to completing his MPA program at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Robert honorably served our country in the US Army for two years and then joined the US Coast Guard Reserves. He retired from the Coast Guard Reserves in 1995.

He lived in Montclair, NJ until July 1957 before moving to Tinton Falls, NJ. Robert also lived on Captree Island, Long Island.

He was employed as an auditor for Lambrides and Samson and as an auditor and Supervising auditor in NJ. Dept. of Human Services, Division of Auditing, retiring in 2002. In addition, Robert enjoyed part time employment as a dive Instructor at Shark River Dive Center from 1980-1982. He was an accomplished Dive Master.

He volunteered his time to many organizations, including: NJ NY Baykeepers, Tinton Falls Environmental Commission, Tinton Falls Library Board, Sierra Club, SEAS, Whale Pond Brook Watershed Association, Jersey Shore Sea Kayak, American Littoral Society, Clearwater Festival, and Princeton Ski Club. He also did ESL tutoring and Habitat for Humanity through Tower Hill Church, Red Bank

Robert enjoyed family, sailing, all boating, traveling, skiing, scuba diving, genealogy, history, gardening, politics and many other activities. He loved animals and at the time of death he had a dog (Gracie) and a cat (Bootsie).

Robert is survived by his Sister, Elizabeth and husband Richard Loray, Nephews, Paul Loray and David Loray and wife Laura, Grandniece, Charlotte Loray, longtime companion Joanne Pannone along with many cousins and many close friends.

A memorial gathering will be held on August 3rd from 6pm to 9pm at the John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank, NJ. A memorial service will be held at The First Presbyterian Church at Tower Hill on August 4th at 11am. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert’s name to the Sierra Club or Doctors without Borders (for Ukraine relief).
